Parenting

Parenting is such a challenging role! And there are so many people telling us how we should do it.

I am not one of those people. But I hope that by sharing my own - often highly flawed - experiences, I can offer reassurance and empathy to others going through similar challenges.

PARENTHOOD AND BIBLE READING: WHERE CAN I FIND THE TIME?

February 7, 2013 11 Comments

How does a busy, tired parent make time to read the Bible? The 'why' and 'how' are outlined in this article.

You know the phrase "If something's worth doing, it's worth doing well"? I have a new version, designed for parents: "If something's worth doing, it's worth doing at the first opportunity you get...you sure as hell won't get another chance". Example: my kid goes down for a nap. "Great," I think. … [Read more...] about PARENTHOOD AND BIBLE READING: WHERE CAN I FIND THE TIME?

PARENTHOOD AND MEETING TOGETHER: THE IMPORTANCE OF A ‘TRIBE’

January 14, 2013 22 Comments

The importance of finding your 'tribe' as a Christian parent and some ideas for how to do it!

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." Hebrews 10:24-25 What does 'meeting together' actually mean? … [Read more...] about PARENTHOOD AND MEETING TOGETHER: THE IMPORTANCE OF A ‘TRIBE’

SEE YOU SOON: A MOTHER’S STORY OF LOSING A SON TO ADDICTION

November 19, 2012 14 Comments

A Christian parent's story of losing a son to addiction. Death by drugs is a taboo, not least in Christian circles. So how did this couple cope?

When my phone alerts me to a new text message I instinctively reach for it, unlock it and read the message. It's now such an intuitive reaction that I do it whilst doing something else - with the consequence that I'm only half engaging with the content of the message. Most of the time, this doesn't … [Read more...] about SEE YOU SOON: A MOTHER’S STORY OF LOSING A SON TO ADDICTION

WHY CAN’T WE DO HALLOWEEN LIKE OUR AMERICAN FRIENDS?

October 28, 2012 10 Comments

Can we celebrate Halloween as Christians in a fun way?

Halloween is a couple of days away, and I'm trying to reconcile several different things in my head. As a Christian, I'm not comfortable with celebrating things that represent evil. I'm not massively keen on being disturbed at home by strangers asking for sweets. I'd rather not try and pretend I'm … [Read more...] about WHY CAN’T WE DO HALLOWEEN LIKE OUR AMERICAN FRIENDS?

HOW DO I STAY ON TOP OF MY KIDS’ TOYS?

October 4, 2012 13 Comments

How do I stay on top of my kids' toys?

Not the most glamorous topic, I know, but it's something I've been chatting to friends about recently, and it seems we all struggle. One friend reckons toy storage should be taught in antenatal classes, it's so tricky. I have to agree. How to store toys in a practical, space-saving and easily … [Read more...] about HOW DO I STAY ON TOP OF MY KIDS’ TOYS?

DAYS LIKE THESE

September 21, 2012 4 Comments

When you feel bored or frustrated as a parent, like you're letting your kids down - don't be discouraged. God is with you in the here and now.

Yesterday I had one of those Days. You know the ones. There were no tantrums, no trips to A&E, no breakages of major appliances. It was just one of those Days. I felt severely lacking in creative ideas. Mister (3) spent the morning at pre-school, while Missy (1) napped, so I had both kids awake … [Read more...] about DAYS LIKE THESE

YUMMY MUMMY, LETTING THINGS SLIDE

July 31, 2012 7 Comments

Even stay-at-home mamas can find it hard to keep on top of things! And that's OK - the kids are our priority. The housework can wait.

Recently I scanned one of those 'what's hot/what's not' columns at the front of a lifestyle magazine. Under 'what's not' I was interested to read that 'yummy mummies' were on their way out, because they were more prone to depression than 'working mums who let things slide'. Oh dear, I thought. I'm a … [Read more...] about YUMMY MUMMY, LETTING THINGS SLIDE

FATHERS’ DAY

June 18, 2012 8 Comments

A simple gift from a toddler to his Dad - and the powerful lesson it taught me about our relationship with Father God.

Yesterday was Father's Day. I was pretty proud of myself for getting ahead on this. It was several weeks ago when I took Mister into the Beer Shop in town, allowed him to pick out some ales for his Dad and bought them on his behalf. (This is allowed, right? I figure since he's 2, and not 15, and … [Read more...] about FATHERS’ DAY
