As a mum, author and book reviewer, I am always on the look out for fabulous books – both for my own kids and to share more widely with other families.
And as a Christian mum of three boys and a girl, I am particularly keen to find the best Christian books about women in the bible. I want my daughter to have fabulous role models, and I want my boys to grow up with female leadership normalised for them.
There are plenty of strong female characters in Christian children’s books – if you know where to find them! So that’s my job here: to make your life easier by bringing you the absolute best Christian books about women in the bible.
In addition, this list includes modern Christian fiction chapter books with strong female characters – because sometimes you want to embed key truths about Christian living through fiction which makes you think.
And of course, there are plenty of memoir/biography titles here too – books which share the lives of strong female characters who lived wholeheartedly for Christ.
I’ll be adding to this list as I discover new books, and if you come across any titles that should be in this blog post, please suggest it in the comments below. If you’re an author or publisher, why not contact me about a review? I’d love to hear from you.
Whatever type of book you’re looking for, I’m sure you’ll find it in this selection of the best Christian books about women in the bible that I’ve found.
Stories of women in the bible
There are some amazing retellings of bible stories out there.
I’m particularly interested in Christian books about women in the bible, because not only are they few and far between, but they really are some of the best stories in the bible…IMHO!
1. Mighty girl mighty God books

If you’re looking for a women of the bible book series, look no further than the Mighty Girl, Mighty God series. Written to fill a gap in the market for a children’s book series focusing entirely on biblical women, these are vividly illustrated and written in rhyme to make great read-alouds for the whole family.
These Christian books about women in the bible are biblically faithful and engagingly written to capture the imaginations of 4-8 year olds (but older and younger have loved them too!). So far, the series comprises six books: Deborah and Jael, Abigail, Rahab, Esther, Hagar and Ruth – and is growing every year.
2. Queen Esther, nation saver

This beautifully-written middle-grade chapter book, sharing stories of women in the bible, is great for older kids who like a longer read-aloud story, or are keen to read for themselves.
Author Amy Scott Robinson brings to life the stories of several well-known and lesser-known biblical women, including the Daughters of Zelophehad, Miriam and – obviously – Queen Esther. Each story is lovingly retold, with a section at the end of each story to help children pause and reflect on what we can learn from each incredible woman.
Strong female characters in Christian children’s books
These books feature not biblical women but Christian women of extraordinary faith who have lived since bible times. Their lives, in different ways, show an incredible devotion to Jesus in a variety of different cultures.
3. Extraordinary women of faith

This is a beautiful hardback picture book with delightful, quirky illustrations. It tells the stories of several faith-filled women from across history – each with their own single or double page spread to educate and entertain young readers.
Information about female Christian sportspeople, artists, business owners, missionaries and more is presented in short chunks across the page. The book is sure to inspire your girls and boys that, whatever their gifts and talents, God can use them in amazing ways!
4. Lightkeepers Girls series (5 books)

My older two kids loved this series when they were primary/elementary school aged. Each inspiring role model has a chapter to themselves, where their story of their growing faith (and what they did with it) is told in an engaging way.
Across the series, young readers get to hear about such brilliant women as Corrie Ten Boom, Joni Eareckson Tada, Jackie Pullinger, Gladys Aylward and more. Many of the stories are edge-of-your-seat exciting, as these women do the most incredible things in the name of Jesus!
5. Do great things for God series (12 books)

This is a gorgeous hardback picture book series for younger children (4-8s). We’ve absolutely loved these stories (even as my kids grew out of the age target). They’re told very clearly, with no extraneous language, so they make great read-alouds for even very little children, as well as fabulous reading practice for young readers.
The illustrations are beautiful, and there is a longer biography at the back of the book for anyone wanting a bit more details. Wonderfully produced.
6. The hiding place

My 10 year old twin boys couldn’t get enough of this enticing graphic novel. Telling the unbelievable story of Corrie Ten Boom and her family – how they hid Jews in their home during Nazi occupation – it is a surefire winner for any child who loves action and adventure.
The strength, bravery and faith of Corrie and her sister Betsie shine through this absolute page-turner. Based on the Christian classic memoir ‘The Hiding Place’, this is a middle-grade graphic novel (abridged version) for older children and teenagers. Although abridged, it does contain details of concentration camps and Nazi persecution, so isn’t for the faint-hearted.
Fiction chapter books with strong female characters
7. Louisa Freya, dragon slayer

Written by the same author as ‘Queen Esther, nation saver’, this book takes a slightly different tack. Sharing traditional folk tales from around the world, featuring female heroes, the author includes a little reflection at the end of each one, helping readers link the values of what they’ve read with their own Christian beliefs.
It’s a great one for kids who aren’t sure what they believe, or who aren’t keen to read the bible. This book gives them a little Christian thought without feeling too ‘heavy’. And the stories are lovely.
8. Destiny’s rebel trilogy

For middle-grade fantasy or adventure fans, this female-fronted trilogy is a gripping read. I read them to my eldest when he was around 10/11, and we both enjoyed them.
Free-spirited Kat never asked to be Queen. A life of regal elegance sat on a throne and hosting state dinner parties is not for her. She’d much rather be away, fighting enemies and putting her money where her mouth is on behalf of the Kingdom she so strongly wants to defend. The three books follow her journey – ending happily, but with plenty of adventure and mishaps along the way.
9. The tigers in the tower

Forget the kids, this is a book I enjoyed and couldn’t put down! (It would also be great for middle grade!)
Set in the nineteenth century, the book tells the enticing tale of strong-willed 12 year old Sahira, who – with her parents – is bringing two tigers back from her native India to London, where they will take up residence in the Tower of London (which used to house a kind of zoo, long before zoos existed). But tragedy strikes and her parents die on the journey. Sahira arrives in London – alone except for her tigers, determined to fight the cruel orphanage she is put into, and protect these most beautiful of God’s creatures with the help of an unlikely group of friends. A real page-turner, with a strong female lead!
10. Abigail series (3 books)

These are really fun, contemporary novels featuring the ups and downs of 9 year old Abigail’s life. Readers in KS2 or upper elementary will see themselves and their lives in Abigail, and the way she learns about Jesus through these books will certainly make an impression on them.
My 10 year old boys enjoyed book one and are looking forward to checking out the others in the series. They laughed at the ridiculous scrapes Abigail gets herself into, as well as empathising with her emotions when things aren’t going to plan. Brilliant books for helping kids work out what their faith looks like in practice.
11. Sienna series (2 books)

These books are very well crafted, and really grabbed the attention of my usually-non-reading daughter when she was around 10-11. ‘The Treasure Man’ tells the story of Sienna (11), her mum and younger brothers befriending a homeless man. It’s a captivating story, made more engaging by the way Sienna learns to listen to God and follow his promptings through her growing friendship. It’ll make your kids think about their relationship with God and how they hear him.
The second book, ‘Love from Sienna’, sees Sienna desperate to change her mum’s situation, working unhealthy hours for an unfair boss. As she learns more about how to hear God through the bible and through journalling, Sienna goes on an unexpected journey of faith and forgiveness.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this round-up of the best Christian books about women in the bible that I’ve come across. Which ones are on your wishlist? Which ones would you add to this list? Let me know in the comments!
