Izzy's Unexpected Week
This was a great read for them. Izzy spends a week with an estranged Aunty – and, through a series of letters left for her by her Gran, comes to know Jesus as her friend.
The plot does work out a little too ‘perfectly’ throughout ‘Izzy’s Unexpected Week’ – but actually for kids who see things in black and white, this can be a helpful approach for showing them how Jesus can help them with their daily lives and challenges. I appreciated the huge variety of teaching points demonstrated through Izzy’s story – that Jesus can make us brave, give us words to say in difficult situations, help us forgive and give people a second chance. It shows the impact Jesus makes on an individual, a family and a community of friends.
There is so much in ‘Izzy’s Unexpected Week’ to make kids think about who Jesus is and what role he is playing in their lives. We loved it! At the end of the book there are pages which are more reflective and could be used as the basis of a few devotions. We haven’t done these yet but I love that they’re there.
