Write it on their Hearts: Practical Help for Discipling Your Kids
Rather than approach our children’s faith from a rather defensive “let’s try and keep them in church” approach, ‘Write it on their Hearts’ is written by a discipleship pastor – someone whose life’s work is to guide people into maturity as believers. If we want this for our kids (and who wouldn’t?), this is the book to guide us as we guide them. Chris Swain takes six principles of discipleship from the life of Jesus (love, prayer, connection, Scripture, accountability and rest), then spends a chapter on each one, giving us tools we can use to nurture our children’s faith.
I found ‘Write it on their Hearts’ a powerful read, something that’s left me thinking and reflecting long after the final page. I’ve used, or adapted, its tools in discipling my older two kids since they were 14 and 12 – and although the suggested methods would work best for 9-18 year olds, I wish I’d read this when mine were younger so I could have prepared better. Yes, some of the ideas might be a little idealistic, but when it comes to faith, I’d rather aim high. ‘Write it on their Hearts’ is strongly recommended.
