The Songs of a Warrior

My eight year old was enthralled by this book and each time we read it was asking for “one more chapter please”.

His review of this book is that “I learnt more about Saul and Jonathan through this religious epic. I don’t think Saul was bad, he just did naughty things. I think David easily obeyed God. I would recommend it to children aged 7 to 11, who are Christian but also those who don’t have a faith”.

There are some scenes which are slightly gruesome so do take care. Much of the book centres around battles, but on the whole there’s not too much description of violence. As an adult, I really enjoyed ‘The Songs of a Warrior’, and it brought these well-known characters to live for me.

We enjoyed ‘The Songs of a Warrior’ so much we’ve already started reading ‘The Outsider’, Morgan’s retelling of Ruth. I really appreciated these books while my eldest was in a season of not wanting to read the Bible much. They’ve been engaging ways to hear Bible stories and encourage discussions. Highly recommended for families and churches too for their libraries.
