The Lion Baby Bible
‘The Lion Baby Bible’ is one of those. With a padded hardcover, and strong pages (not a board book), it makes a lovely gift for new babies, baptisms and dedications.
‘The Lion Baby Bible’ is comprehensive – going right from creation to the second coming in Revelation – with lots of familiar and less-familiar stories in between. Obviously I’m excited to see Ruth, Naomi, Esther, Mary and Martha included! But also Psalm 139, Proverbs 3, the Lord’s prayer and the Armour of God are given the baby-bible treatment. Each ‘chapter’ is one double-paged spread, with a beautifully-written succinct narrative anchored around what we learn about God, or what this particular bible story/passage means for us.
At lots of points, the reader is encouraged to use the child’s name (e.g. the story of Zacchaeus ends with ‘Jesus wants to spend time with [child’s name] too’) which encourages children, right from birth, that they can have a relationship with God – but also models to the grown-up reading to them how they can speak to their child about Jesus. The illustrations are colourful and contemporary – there’s more than enough on each double page to engage even the smallest baby/toddler while their grown-up is reading them the exquisite words. Some of the language brought a tear to my eye in how its simplicity contained such deep theological riches. Absolutely wonderful.
