The Cartographer's Presence

The story follows the adventure of young artist Arcos, who travels to the mountains of Aratae’Tor for the annual festival in honour of the Cartographer who mapped out the world.

Like other pilgrims, he wanted to offer grain to the cartographer at the citadel – but was instead mistreated by the guards because his name was not in the list of pure Tae’Torian descent. Arcos wonders if the cartographer really cares for him and his family as he faces rejection and hurt. He thinks of his lost father and his mother injured after an earthquake. His quest leads him to some lovely and unlikely friendships – and ultimately he meets Ishua, the Misaro’Deio (or the ‘Messiah’).

Arcos ultimately reconciles to the message that Ishua did come for all, including those not of special descent, as his offering was finally accepted and his mother was healed just as Ishua said. The gospel message is cleverly integrated through the story and the illustrations are lovely, drawn by the author himself.

The Cartographer’s Presence borrows themes from the gospel of John, where Jesus’ earthly ministry takes place – his various sermons and healings. There are references to the Jewish festival of booths and festival of tabernacles from the Old Testament, alongside the practice of public reading of the scriptures.

The author’s note and glossary towards the end is helpful in understanding the context, especially for people unfamiliar with the Bible.

I feel this book would be suitable for kids aged 12+, as the story can be a bit complicated to understand initially. Those familiar with the Bible will understand the references easily.
