Miss, What Does Incomprehensible Mean?
By Fran Hill
Funniest book I read in 2020.
Maybe it’s because of my teaching background, but this memoir of a year in Fran’s secondary English teaching career will have you properly LOLing one minute and weeping the next. Fran spent her teens in foster care (it’s where she came to faith), and when her students’ home-lives trigger memories of her own neglectful childhood home, her perfectly-written, ‘read-between-the-lines’ diary entries will have you extremely moved.
Not very many authors can hit the Funny and Tragic buttons so deftly, but Fran Hill certainly can. Written in diary form, ‘Miss, What Does Incomprehensible Mean?’ is like a cross between Bridget Jones and Gervase Phinn, with some faith aspects but refreshingly down-to-earth. Highly recommended.
