Joshua and the Very Strong City
Kudos to the Good Book Company for including some women amongst the selection (Deborah and Esther have featured so far). For one thing, they’re hardback so make a lovely gift. Then they’re well-illustrated by Jennifer Davison in bright, vivid colours which flood each page with excitement. They’re also interactive, encouraging readers to join in with various words, phrases, actions or body percussion.
You can imagine how ‘Joshua and the Very Strong City’ makes the most of the marching around Jericho, the stamping, the shouting and the trumpets. I love how Tim Thornborough draws out humour from the fact that the Israelites had to march round Jericho seven times before they could shout and blow trumpets. The various false starts in ‘Joshua and the Very Strong City’ will have kids giggling away, fully engaged and awaiting their turn to shout and make trumpet noises.
Ultimately, the focus here is clear: Joshua was only successful because God made him so. And the same mighty God is with us and can help us in our battles too.
