John Knox
I read this book with my 6yo daughter, who was impressed that he got to be a teacher, lawyer, priest and soldier too! “Mumma, John must be super smart.” We were amazed at his various adventures: his exile to England, travels to Switzerland and final return to Scotland. Based in the 16th century, the story covers Catholicism, Protestantism, clashing beliefs of the royalties, battles in Europe, and the Geneva Bible and The Scots Confessions (written by John Knox and friends) so it’s an interesting read for history enthusiasts.
Some themes are difficult – like why people who love God are killed or punished – but these have been written sensitively. The sentences are short but packed with just the right amount of information to pique the interest of children and prompt interesting conversations. I also very much appreciated the opportunity it gave us to have an open conversation with our daughter about saving faith – as Knox, in spite of being a priest, was restless till he found peace in the gospel message of Jesus. The book mentions John 17, the Bible passage which helped Knox trust in Jesus and encourages readers also to trust in Jesus as our Saviour and Lord. There is a helpful timeline, map and discussion questions at the end of the book, plus downloadable worksheets.
