J is for Jesus
Both our children enjoyed the artwork. Our 9-year-old, who particularly appreciates visual design, loved the illustrations, and our 4-year-old was also drawn to them, although the overall format suited him a little less. He was more interested in flicking through the pictures than engaging with the daily readings which were quite long for him.
‘J is for Jesus’ is structured around different aspects of Jesus’ character, with each theme spread across two pages. A vibrant full-page illustration appears on the left, while the right-hand page contains a Bible verse and a devotional reflection and prayer. We found it worked relatively well as a family daily devotional, with each reading being manageable in length while still offering something meaningful to discuss.
In terms of age range, I would probably suggest around 5–8 years old. Our 4-year-old struggled sometimes to engage with the length of the devotional content itself, but then he values active engagement (drawing, speaking etc) while our 9-year-old enjoyed it but is beginning to read material aimed at a slightly older level.
Overall, this is a lovely resource that combines solid biblical teaching with beautiful presentation. It would make an excellent baptism gift, welcome-to-church gift, or present for a young child beginning to explore the Christian faith.
