Happy Finds Her Calm
On Happy’s first day in ‘Therapy dog school’, she is a little bit more energetic, friendly and enthusiastic than her friends. Her eagerness to help comes across as inconvenient to her peers, till they complain and the teacher intervenes, working on strategies to help Happy at home and school. Happy goes on to develop self-control, successfully gets her diploma and starts working as a therapy dog at a counselling centre to help calm kids who, like her, are hoppy and wiggly at times.
“Happy Finds Her Calm” is not a replacement for professional help if needed, but suggests helpful strategies to help high-energy kids who struggle when their words and actions come faster than their thoughts – e.g. play basket, emotions chart, deep breathing exercises, remembering favourite Bible verses, reading a book, listening to music etc.
This is not a Christian book in particular, apart from a suggestion for Bible verses in the ‘calming index’ given at the end of the book. It’s inspired by the real life story of a therapy dog called Happy and is intended for 3-6 year olds, can be read aloud but would also be easy to read independently by early readers.
