Extraordinary Women of Faith
A beautifully illustrated hardback book for children on some extraordinary women who lived for Jesus in different ways? Er…yes please! ‘Extraordinary Women of Faith’ packs a lot in – 31 different women from all different time periods, stretching from Hildegard of Bingen to Joni Eareckson Tada, and spanning a wide variety of different fields. We hear about a diverse group of writers, artists, musicians, athletes, scientists, educators, activists, missionaries and more. Each woman gets a colourful single or double page spread, with lots of interesting detail about their life and a focus on how their faith shaped their work. The standards are included (Fanny Crosby, Corrie Ten Boom, Mother Teresa) but others you may not think of immediately: Jane Austen, Maria Montessori and Dolly Parton.
I love that there is a broad sweep of responses to God and faith represented in ‘Extraordinary Women of Faith’ – helping us think a little more widely about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, and what it might have looked like in a different time or place. We can easily become blinkered by our own ‘version’ of Christianity.
‘Extraordinary Women of Faith’ would make a lovely gift for a primary-aged child.
