Bible Investigators: Creation
Some aspects of it might also work for church kids’ groups or midweek clubs. ‘Creation’ is a hefty A4 volume – you really get your money’s worth – of lessons based around Genesis 1-4, bringing in other areas of the bible where necessary to explain the concepts of sin, redemption and salvation, and crammed full of puzzles, questions and activities.
‘Creation’ is designed for 8-12 year olds. My 10 year olds were picky about which puzzles they did – many of the activities felt a bit ‘school-like’ (which I think is the point – it’s clearly a resource designed for home educators), whereas when my kids look at a book like this, it’s in their leisure time, so they want it to feel fun! And there is plenty in ‘Creation’ which does, it’s just that the impact of the volume as a whole is lost when the lessons are not completed chronologically.
However, for a child who enjoyed writing and puzzles, ‘Creation’ would make a wonderful alternative to devotionals (I say ‘alternative’ because although bible-based, it is more academic and less personal/applicatory in nature). You could work through a little section each day, and then lead into prayer/God-connection time. The concept of sin is told in a fairly un-nuanced way, which might require some unpicking for a trauma-experienced child – but reading it with them, rather than leaving them to it, would be sufficient protection.
