Abigail Gets Left Out

This is a sweet story about nine year old Abigail, and her struggles with feelings of rejection, low self-esteem, and comparing herself to her friends.

As the story progresses, Abigail slowly learns to recognise her own strengths, and accept the limitations of others, working through her emotions with God and reaching out to her friends, despite feeling rejected by them.

My ten year old daughter thought the overall story was “a good read, funny, thoughtful, with a good message of truth behind it”. She and I would recommend this for girls aged 7-9. The writing style is simple and ideal for a developing or confident reader. ‘Abigail gets left out’ has clear Christian themes; Abigail goes to a church kids club and her parents are Christians. Scriptures are prominent throughout, and Abigail prays openly to Jesus. Children familiar with Christian practices would more easily understand these references.

The book is visually appealing with cute illustrations on most pages. There are American English words such as ‘recess’ and ‘sneakers’ which may need explaining. At the back of the book, there’s a link to related activities and book club questions for each chapter.
